Aimee Semple McPherson

Aimee Semple McPherson is one of the most controversial figures in the history of the United States, especially at the beginning of the twentieth century. This woman has been regarded as a saint or sinner by a great number of people who lived during that time. It is important to determine why people used this conflicting rhetoric while speaking about Aimee McPherson.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Aimee Semple McPherson specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More One can argue that these conflicting viewpoints can be mostly explained by the incredible charisma of this person and her ability to influence the audience. In some cases, this influence could be perceived as manipulation. Nevertheless, such words as saint or sinner do not accurately describe the personality of this woman who had various interests, goals, and values. This is one of the main arguments that can be put forward. First, it should be noted Aimee McPhers on was born to a very religious family. In particular, one should pay attention to her mother who was an active supporter of the Salvation Army (Cauchi unpaged). This upbringing strongly influenced her later life, especially her values, beliefs, and attitudes. One should bear in mind that at the beginning of her career she was engaged in the so-called faith healing (Cauchi unpaged). Certainly, it is difficult to prove that she did cure people who asked her for assistance. In some cases, the positive effects can be explained to self-deception, rather than any significant change. This is some of the main points that should be taken into consideration. However, her faith-healing campaign did earn her reputation of a saint who could almost perform miracles, even though she had some failures. Nevertheless, many people were skeptical of her healing abilities, and they viewed her only as a swindler who gave only false hopes to people suffering from various diseases. This is one of the reas ons why she was often perceived as a saint and a sinner at the same time. So, from the very beginning people looked at her from different perspectives. Additionally, one should focus on Aimee McPherson’s preaching and her ability to appeal to large audiences which was almost unprecedented at that time. It should be noted that she founded the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel in Los Angeles. The performances of Aimee McPherson could be visited by more than five thousand people at the same time. This popularity was not matched by any other minister. There were several things that greatly distinguished her among other missionaries. In particular, she was able to combine preaching with theatrical performance. She often relied on the assistance of decorators, artists, carpenters who helped her to produce a long-lasting effect on the audience.Advertising Looking for essay on religion theology? It is often said that her sermons could be seen as a form of entertainment (Sutton 29). So, some of her critics said she was only striving for fame, and her behavior was perceived as vanity (Sutton 29). This is why her sermons could elicit different responses. Nevertheless, she was able to evoke religious feeling in many people who valued her sermons. This is why Aimee McPherson had a reputation of a saint and a sinner at the same time. One should also take into account that Aimee McPherson could be dressed as a firefighter, police officer, or even a princess. This behavior utterly astonished a great number of people (Sutton 29). Again, one can say that she was able to transform a sermon into a theatrical performance, and this goal could not be easily achieved. This approach helped her to engage the audience, but at the same time, her behavior was criticized by other preachers who could not accept this show as a form of religious sermon (Cauchi unpaged). To a great extent, she became to be viewed as a sinner by people who held more conservative views about the behavior of religious people, especially ministers. The dispute between the supporters and opponents of Aimee McPherson continues even nowadays. This debate is particularly relevant to people who represent the Foursquare Church. Additionally, Aimee McPherson was one of the first preachers who began to use radio in order to deliver her sermons to the general public. This reliance on technology was not typical of ministers at the beginning of the twentieth century. This is one of the reasons why she became so famous, and her name became familiar to many people living in the United States. This strategy enabled her to address many listeners. In this way, she gained the status of celebrity. Therefore, one can say that Aimee McPherson could be viewed as a very popular person. This status distinguished Aimee McPherson from other minist ers in the United States. Mass media helped her to achieve many of her goals as a preacher. She was one of the few people who could appeal to mass audiences. Apart from that, Aimee McPherson was a subject of some media scandals that polarized the opinions of people about her. For example, one can mention her alleged kidnapping and escape (The Kidnapping of Aimee Semple McPherson unpaged). This issue was widely discussed by many journalist of that time. McPherson alleged that she was abducted by some unknown criminals. Moreover, she even claimed to be tortured by her kidnappers. Nevertheless, police officers did not find evidence that could prove her claim (The Kidnapping of Aimee Semple McPherson, unpaged). Her supporters believed this kidnapping had been taken place. In contrast, other people believed that McPherson had just tried to attract attention to herself.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Aimee Semple McPherson specifically for you for only $1 6.05 $11/page Learn More Overall, this incident became a subject of many newspaper articles. To some degree, this article reinforced the conflicting opinions about this person, especially if one is speaking about her sanctity. Similarly, mass media closely examined her possible life, especially possible love affairs. This publicity prompted many people to believe that McPherson was a sinner. So, the life of Aimee McPherson attracted the attention of her contemporaries. Overall, such notions as saint or sinner are not quite applicable to Aimee McPherson because they do not reflect the complexity of her personality. She was indeed a very gifted individual who could skillfully interact with the audience. Nevertheless, this ability does not turn her into a saint. Similarly, one can argue that she strived for glory and recognition. Some people can regard this behavior as a form of vanity, but this vanity is typical of many individuals who are not usually called sinners. Th is is one of the main points that one can make. Nevertheless, McPherson could indeed exercise a strong influence on many people. To some degree, her opinions, values, and attitudes shaped their behavior. Works Cited Cauchi, Tony, 2002. Work Breakdown Structure Essays

Work Breakdown Structure Essays Work Breakdown Structure Paper Work Breakdown Structure Paper Chapman (2004) describes a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) as a results-oriented family tree that captures all the work of a project in an organized way. The WBS therefore presents graphically the tasks in tabular as a hierarchical tree but it can also be a presented as task list in the form of a Gantt chart schedule. A simple example of WBS is shown in Appendix A. WBS as a planning tool In simple sense, the WBS could be used as a planning tool. Some projects could really be too big that could result to confusion if no planning is done. Imagine a contractor planning to build 1,000 houses with a month without a plan. How will he or she see to it that materials are available and delivered on time would be serious thing to consider. Add the fact that prices of materials could fluctuate in the market that could affect the contractor is sourcing the same materials in the light of cash flow requirements. To illustrate, it could not just be assumed that the materials will all be delivered at the construction site immediately as there could be problems as to storage and even security. One could be overwhelmed and confused if the amount of work and time is underestimated when it will turnout that it could be more. Mismanagement of projects normally comes from lack of planning and one who wants to comply in contracts could not afford not to have a plan. The nature of contracts with the use of WBS Contracts that are entered into between the parties create obligation between them. A typical construction contract for example that exist between the contractor (builder) and a contractee (owner the building) will cause the contractor to deliver the constructed according to specifications (Prager, J.1994) made by the contractee. Under the contract, the contractor must finish the building or project for given period time, using require materials, employing the required skills from its workers and completing other requirements that would satisfy the provisions of the contracts. The contractee in return may promise to pay the contractor based on progress billing or upon completion. Under either scenario, the work break structure may be of use to both parties. How may the contractor may make use of the WBS? On the part of the contractor, he or she may makes use of the WBS to plan the project for the construction of the house. In the WBS, contractor may specify the activities or the works to be accomplished within the a give period, which could daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly for big projects involving numerous number of housing units. With the WBS, which may be in form of a tree or Gantt chart, the corresponding cost and amount of materials may also be identified and plotted as guide by the contractor to see how he is or she is progressing in his or her work. Logically, the WBS could therefore serve as planning tool where the contractor could put down all the necessary activities that must be finished under given deadlines. In the case of progress billing type of contracts, the contractor can then use the WBS or the Gantt chart to document the extent of completion for purposes of billing the contractee. In the WBS, the contractor also binds himself or herself to do certain activities ahead of other, hence this could be used by the contractor to explain possible delay in finishing the contracts. A typical example is the delivery of materials beyond the control of the contractor. If the delay of the delivery was beyond the fault of the contractor, then the delay could be blamed on the said contractor, in which case the WBS could really a functional tool to justify delay so as to avoid damages. How may the contractee may make use of the WBS? On the part of the contractee, the WBS could be used to demand measurement of performance. As indicted earlier contract have deadlines, hence the contractee my charge some penalties for delay if such provisions were made part of the contract. On the basis of the WBS, the contractee may pay or may also refuse to pay in accordance with the contract. It could thus be said also that the WBS is the graphical representation of contract that was put in words and which was acknowledge in writing by the contracting parties. In so using the WBS, the contractee may check if the contractee is too fast that may tell something about the quality of project. Hence finishing ahead of time does not necessarily mean that the contractor is efficient. In construction contracts time could be very relevant in imposing standards. Cements need to dry well before other part of construction could continue and for some this may take time. Even in soil preparation good construction practice allow the passage of time to make it sure the materials need to be allowed some time to effective. This could be applicable also in the case of paints. The WBS could therefore guide the contractee in verifying that only the works to be done first should be done ahead to ensure quality of the project. In case of lack of fault of both contracting the parties, the WBS is desirable to have a contingency plan in order to prevent losses to both parties. In certain contracts however, time is of the essence that completion on time could be of paramount importance. Conclusion We have seen that work breakdown structure has its use and purpose in contracts. From the were discussed, it could thus be said that the WBS is a requirement for contract as a planning tool, as an evaluation tool and even as a legal tool for both of the parties of the contract to measure and determine the compliance of their obligations to each other. Based on discussion, the view could be confirmed that WBS may be designed to try to achieve certain goals such as: (1) being compatible with how the work that will be done and how costs and schedules will be managed; (2) giving visibility to important or risky work efforts; (3) allowing mapping of requirements, plans, testing, and deliverables; (4) fostering clear ownership by managers and task leaders; and (5) providing data for performance measurement and historical databases (Chapman, 2004). Metropolis City Report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Metropolis City Report - Essay Example All these come with occupational health and safety challenges. This article will explore the occupational health and safety challenges faced by rapidly developing cities with similar to Metropolis’ and explain a hazard and risk assessment plan that would enable these cities prepare for the public health risks that come with the exposure to environmental chemicals. Land contamination involves a wide array of conditions defined in the Environmental Protection Act (Environment Agency, 2010). The UK has had a long and varied industrial history and some of the industries that have been active at one time or the other being viewed as potential land pollutants. Much of the UK’s industrial activity, especially in the heavy industry sectors of iron and steel manufacture, chemical production and coal extraction took place before the modern systems of environmental pollution controls had been put in place. It was not until 1990 that the UK enacted a law to control land contamination (Hester et al., 2001). Metropolis faced several hazards resulting from land pollution from its former textile, coal and steel industries. Most of the land pollution that arose from the textile industry was as a result of the numerous chemical processes that raw materials pass through before turning into fabric. The textile industry processes such as dyeing, bleaching, printing, mercerization, scouring, sizing and washing require large volumes of water and result in equally large amounts of waste water which when released into the environment can cause land pollution (Darby, 1973). The waste water can not only contaminate ground water but can also interfere with the surrounding aquatic ecosystem. The waste generated from textile industries can be broadly categorized into four groups namely the toxic or hazardous wastes, high volume wastes, dispersible wastes and the difficult to treat wastes. The difficult to treat wastes are

2 Reflection Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

2 Reflection - Essay Example Part of it can be external, with us investing in causes that we think are appropriate. Another way to do it is through values and codes of ethics. A question that has troubled many people since the dawn of time is how should a person lead a good, ethical life? Furthermore, how should a business behave in an ethical manner? There are as many theories as there are grains of sand on the beach, but a few ideas over the years have been more popular than others. Some people are born into religions where these questions are answered for them. They are able to know from an young age what their god tells them is the right thing to do and what is the wrong thing. Others question their faith and try to revise their morality, bringing in parts of other religions or philosophies. Still others have no real faith and try to build a moral foundation out of their personal experience adding rules and content to it as the years go by. In the world of today we see a new strain of thinking: the professional code of conduct. This is the form of CSR that may be most cost effective to a company. It is easy to impose, sounds good to the public, and co sts a company little. Plus, in the end it will pay dividends. This code would set out what members can and cannot do. But not all codes are created equal. Some are exhaustive, others merely illustrative. Some make suggestions, other state explicitly. However, it is important to be aware of the counterargument that exists to all CSR strategies. There are many unintended consequences for those who push the Corporate Social Responsibility agenda. It does not always lead to the results that a company might expect. Let businesses be businesses and let charities be charities. It is simply too confusing and leads to too many unintended consequences for things to be set up in any other manner. The bottom of a company sometimes falls out there: there are no sure

The Human Development Index (HDI) for China and India Essay

The Human Development Index (HDI) for China and India - Essay Example The four input dimension indices for calculating HDI are, therefore, the life expectancy index, mean years of schooling index, expected years of schooling index, and income index (HDRO 1). Minimum value for life expectancy is set at 20 years, 0 years for both of the education variables, and $100 for the income variable measured in per capita gross national income (GNI). General formula for calculating dimension index is: Dimension index = Actual value – Minimum value Maximum value – Minimum value The HDI is the geometric mean of the normalised indices measuring achievements in each dimension. It is calculated as HDI = Where; Ilife – life expectancy index2 Ieducation - Education index Iincome – Income index Case study: China and India Table 1: Computed HDIs and input variables for China and India INDIA: HDI Indicators HDI Indicator Value Goalposts for HDI 2011 Dimension Indices Maximum value Minimum value Life anticipation (years) 65.4 65.9 20.0 0.716 0. 546 Schooling mean years (years)3 4.4 4.6 0 0.336 Expected years of schooling (years)4 10.3 9.8 0 0.572 Combined education index 0.978 0 0.448 GNI per capita (PPP $)5 3,468 3,435 100 0.508 CHINA: HDI Indicators Indicator Value Maximum value Minimum value Dimension Indices HDI Life anticipation (years) 73.5 83.4 20.0 0.844 0.687 Schooling Mean years (years) 7.5 13.1 0 0.573 Expected years of schooling (years) 11.6 18.0 0 0.644 Combined education index 0.978 0 0.621 GNI per capita (PPP $) 7,476 107,721 100 0.618 HDI computation process: (I) India Life Expectancy index = (65.4-20)/(83.4-20) = 0.716 Mean years of schooling index = (4.4-0)/ (13.1-0) = 0.336 Expected years of schooling index = (10.3-0)/ (18-0) = 0.572 Combined education index = (0.336*0.572) ^ (1/2)-0/ (0.978-0) = 0.448 Income index = (Ln (3,468) – Ln (100))/ (Ln (107,721) - Ln (100)) = 0.508 HDI = (0.716*0.448*0.508) ^ (1/3) = 0.546 (II) China Life Expectancy index = (73.5-20)/(83.4-20) = 0.844 Mean years of schoo ling index = (7.5-0)/ (13.1-0) = 0.573 Expected years of schooling index = (11.6-0)/ (18-0) = 0.644 Combined education index = (0.573*0.644) ^ (1/2)-0/ (0.978-0) = 0.621 Income index = (Ln (7,476) – Ln (100))/ (Ln (107,721) - Ln (100)) = 0.618 HDI = (0.844*0.621*0.618) ^ (1/3) = 0.687 Table 2: Computed and Reported HDIs for India and China HDI Comparison Country Reported 2011 Calculated India 0.547 0.546 China 0.687 0.687 Calculated HDIs for both India and China are not significantly different from the reported figures as shown in Table 2. Development of a Five Year Career Plan

Development of a Five Year Career Plan Five Year Career Plan Introduction Once we enroll into the university for higher studies, every minute we live is crucial to our career. I do not intend to drop out of college nor do I intend waste my money by just holding a degree on my hand and not knowing where to go. To make our time as a university student we are ought to develop a five year plan for our career so that we know exactly how to best utilize our current time period and know exactly where to head to once we graduate. I am to become an Electronic Engineer and see myself as a part of a multinational organizational working for my dream job. How do I plan to achieve this goal? I have skills, time and techniques to manage that ought to enable me to get to where I want to be in the next five years. The first step was to enroll in to the Electronics and electrical department of the University of Derby. That I already have done. What do I do now? This I now have to analyse. An Electronic engineer uses human senses and expertise to transmit and process information through a wide variety of technological gadgets that we normally use and the ones that can bring about a change in the environment both the natural and the business/economical. Will be a good electronic engineer? A swot analysis would help me in analyzing my position. SWOT Analysis Career planning is nothing less than along term strategy that would govern and manage our future, and the best way to assist this strategy to use the strategy matrix known as SWOT analysis. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. SWOT would determine the efficiency of the strategy we aim to adopt for my career choice. It would show my position compared to the possibility of getting a victory or defeat. (Dev Seeker) If I end up with more weaknesses than strengths, then it would be obvious that electronic engineering is certainly not my calling. So lets begin. Strengths I love mathematics! Likeness for Mathematics is crucial to become an electronic engineer. The education that I am getting from the University of Derby puts me at par for the job. They are offering a four year course with hands-on experience of the professors and the alumni to learn from. Secondly, I have the ability to generate independent and genuine thoughts. I am creative, innovative, imaginative and a visionary. All of which constitute a good electronic engineer. My scores so far suggest that I have an above-average intelligence level together with capability to conduct logical reasoning. Thirdly, I possess good job hunting skills. Weaknesses When I leave for the job hunt, I would not be having any job experience so that would be a minus on my part. The university of Derby does not offer work placement facility so obtaining work experience and getting a final job would be my own doing. Opportunities There is scarcity of the skills I posses in the electronic industry producing electronic gadget and technologies. I have options in working in changing work designs, line management and digital signal processing in private consultation firms, development laboratories and in government organizations. I can also open up my own company with my own unique ideas for gadgets. Threats My class fellows and the students from other universities with the same education background who contain better work experience and fast job hunting skills may pose a threat to me while I search for a job of an electronic engineer. By the time I graduate, the idea that I may have to open up my own company, may get outdated, as we live in a world with fast changing technology. Time Management The University of Derby offers a four year course. During which I would have to accommodate time for internships so that I can obtain enough work experience by the time I graduate. But I would not get a job the very next day! To do so, I would have to manage time efficiently. Time management would require me to keep a track of all the job opportunities and internship opportunities as they sprung up in the newspapers and on the internet. Follow up to class schedules, so that I dont end up wasting my time in repeating courses. I would take the courses specializing in the field of Electronics in my second year of my four year course. And once I graduate, the whole fifth year would involve managing time in scheduling for job interviews. Sources of Information For planning a career it is very crucial to have a data bank to gather and analyse and act upon the facts I gather up from various sources of information regarding my career plan. My sources of information are: 1. My professors at the university of Derby 2. My parents 3. The internet 4. Newspapers Information Analysis What information have I got so far regarding Electronic Engineering? Electronic engineering supplements human senses and their skills through brining about changes in the technological aspects of work and commerce. There are several branches of electronic engineering that I can opt for. After four years I can work for a private company, a government organization and start my own company. I have the energy, the creativity and the skills to become a successful electronic engineer. What have I learned so far? Questioning Techniques and Listening Techniques Questioning and listening are very important to attain the right information regarding the career and how to proceed upon it. They would uncover my misunderstandings and solve my problems. I ask open and closed ended questions. Open, which do not require a framed and constrained answer and can be as big as it can be. Closed on the other hand would answer in either yes or no. Good listening skill is as much about listening as about speaking, so I listen carefully as to whatever my parents, teachers, guiders in short say to me or answer me regarding my queries of the career that I have chosen. Conclusion I want to be an Electronic Engineer in the next five years. I have the skills to get the job. I will spend four years in studying for the degree in Electronic Engineering, at the University of Derby and search for the job in the fifth year. California Missions †Monuments or Tombstones? Essay -- Exploratory Es

California Missions – Monuments or Tombstones? Most Californians are introduced to the California Mission system in one of two ways: in their early education, or when they first visit a mission. Unfortunately, both methods are prone to simplification or bias in conveying the history of the missions. What this has led to is Californians who are ignorant of the history of the land they walk on. Consequently, visitors to the missions treat them as mere tourist attractions, instead of trying to embrace and understand the complex issues the missions represent. The issue was brought sharply into focus for me recently, when I was in the cemetery of Mission Santa Barbara. It was a sunny afternoon and the tiny graveyard was crowded with people. I stood there and took in the scene around me. I saw children eating candy bars and dropping the wrappers on the ground. A group of people were shouting across the cemetery to their companions, something about a tour bus. I could hear the humming of the soda machines on the other side of the wall. A woman was having a loud conversation on a cell-phone about her lunch. A man knocked me aside in his rush to get a photo of himself standing next to a statue of St. Francis. And there I stood, in the middle of it all, with the bodies of nearly four thousand Chumash beneath my feet. I didn't know whether to scream or cry. Don't you people know what you are walking on? Don't you know there are no grave markers because people were dying too fast for individual graves? I could almost feel the souls of the Chumash and the padres crying out. Don't these people know what this place is? The sad truth is, they don't know. And how could they? Californian kids usually study the missions in the third or... ...the soldiers and rancheros who lived there as well. The missions aren't just sugar cube churches. They are the place where one people had a sincere, yet terribly misguided goal of helping and integrating another people. Instead of helping and including them, they dominated and destroyed them. It is crucial for us to treat the missions as more than buildings to visit. We must envision the inhabitants' thoughts, feelings and lives. We do this not just because it is history, but because it is our history. This is what happened on the land we walk on when we visit the Missions. We shouldn't keep walking in ignorance. Elementary schools and the missions themselves need to present more of the actual history to people. It is only with that knowledge that visitors will truly appreciate and respect the missions for the valuable lessons and grave costs they represent.

Ana Code of Ethics Summary

Introduction There are nine provisions included in the ANA code of ethics. The provisions can be broken Into three categories. The first category Is the nurse's ethical responsibilities to her patient which is provisions one through three. Second is the nurse's obligation to herself, provisions four through six. The third ethical requirement for nurses Is related to their relationship to the nursing profession, community, nation, and world overall. This focus is summarized in provisions seven through nine [ (AmericanNurses Association, 2013) J. Provisions 1-3 The first three provisions relate to the nurse's responsibility to treat everyone with dignity and respect regardless of that Individual's background, ethnicity, or the nature or severity of their illness, as well as making the patient the primary concern and advocating for them. There Is absolutely no room for discrimination in the nursing profession. â€Å"One of the simplest principles of distributive Justice is that of str ict or radical equality. The principle says that every person should have the same bevel of material goods and services† [ (Mason, Alleviate, & Chaffed, 2012, p. 83) l. The Bible also supports the principle of treating others with dignity and respect as stated in 1 Pet 2:AAA: â€Å"Show proper respect to everyone.

Literature review with annotated bibliography Essays - Free Essays

Literature review with annotated bibliography Essays - Free Essays Literature review with annotated bibliography Name: Student No#: 141639 Unit Name: Tertiary Music Studies Lecturers name: Title: Literature review with annotated bibliography Paul Taylor Assessment No#: Due Date: Week 6, Assessment 1 5pm Friday, 17th October 2014 Many people have accredited Brian Epstein for The Beatles worldwide success, yet it seems that he has been overlooked as an inductee into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Non- Performer Area for over 29 years. This review will focus on 3 major things Epstein did to help the Beatles success which emerge repeatedly throughout the literature reviewed. These are: His absolute belief in the band, his vision for the bands image, and the Beatles musicality. This paper will primarily focus on whether Epstein contribution to The Beatles success merits a place in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Non-Performer Area. According to Spitz (2005) and Riley (2011) there are two different theories about how Epstein was introduced to the music of the Beatles. Epstein himself states that he was first introduced to the Beatles from a customer Raymond Jones when he requested a copy of My Bonnie from the NEMS record store that Epstein managed as part of the family business. I had never [before] given a thought to any of the Liverpool beat groups then up and coming [sic] in the cellar clubs (Spitz, 2005, p.266). While Riley (2011) argues that Epstein knew about the Beatles long before he let on. As a prominent record store manager, Epstein regularly advertised in Mersey Beats and was also a columnist in the music driven newspaper. Riley (2011) suggests that Epstein wanted his Beatlemaniac readers to believe that he didnt read anything in Mersey Beats except his own ads (Riley, 2011, p.141). Regardless of the way Epstein discovered the Beatles, the one thing no one can deny is his immediate attraction to the band and the belief that they would be one of the best. I was immediately struck by their music, their beat, and their sense of humour on stage. And even afterwards when I met them again I was struck again by their personal charm. And it was there that really it all started (Lewis, n.d, para 7). Almost a month after the Beatles had signed a management deal with Epstein, he was becoming rather disappointed in there stage presence, appearance, and there abilty to sequence set of songs during a live show. Spitz states He insisted on some ground rules. From now on, eating onstage was out; so was smoking and punching one another, cursing, chatting up girls, taking requests, and sleeping. Lateness would no longer be tolerated In addition to the above, the Beatles were required to post their set lists beforehand and this provoked heated debate bow after each number. And not just a casual nod a big, choreographed bow, which, by a silent count, was delivered smartly and on cue Later on, he would convince the others of the wisdoms in wearing suits (Spitz, 2005, p.280) Lewis concurs that He got the Beatles out of their mid-1950s leather and jeans look and into very stylish early 1960s mod suits. Without that they would have never got on TV shows in that era (Lewis, n.d, para 11). There was no denying that there new image played a major role in their rise to the top of the industry. Without this vast change, the Beatles career could have been immensely different. The point that many historians miss is that Epsteins makeover was just from a visual perspective. The Beatles sound was their own. The decision to not interfere with the Beatles music is considered one of the best decisions that Epstein made. According to Liverpool Historian Spencer Leigh, Epstein biggest triumph was in leaving the Beatles music alone (Riley, 2011, p.153) However, Epstein did influence the Beatles when it came to single releases. During the release of A Hard Days Night Epstein pushed to have Cant Buy Me Love released as single instead of Roll Over Beethoven. This song went on to reach No.1 in the US. Dolloff states The very idea of a group writing all of the music and lyrics themselves was unheard of in the early 1960s, but Epstein insisted on it (Dolloff, 2013, para

The Cold War - Battle of the Superpowers essays

The Cold War - Battle of the Superpowers essays The Cold War began as an ideological struggle between the two superpowers that emerged in the aftermath of World War Two (WWII). The destruction of the former Western European balance of power post WWII allowed for new nations to emerge superpowers. The tensions that arose from the restructured bipolar balance of power sparked a global east/west rift that continues to exist today. From 1945 to 1991, the United States of America (USA) and the former Soviet Union (USSR) were engaged in an ideological war that resulted in a race to influence and thereby control as much of the world as possible. A costly race for better nuclear technology and more global influence ensued between the two superpowers, which created a global possibility of nuclear war. In 1945, the destructive capability of nuclear warfare was demonstrated when the USA dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan. The threat of nuclear warfare that arose seventeen years later in the Cold War thus evoked fear across the globe and heightened global tensions. The USSR and USA's respective endorsements of communism and capitalism throughout the world led them to directly implicate many countries in the Cold War and simultaneously made them susceptible to involvement in a nuclear war. The significance of the Cold War to world history is that the capitalist/communist stalemate had the potential of erupting into nuclear war, which affected not only Americans and Soviets, but implicated people across the globe. The USA and USSR's ultimate desire to end the balance of power stalemate between their respective world views of capitalism and communism caused the superpowers to pursue a race to impose their influence upon as many nations as possible, thus creating a global conflict that divided the world upon ideological lines and nearly resulted in the world's total nuclear destruction. A major component of the competition between the USA and USSR revolved around a costly arms race. Both ...

Teacher Leadership. Behaviors and Importance of Teacher Leaders Essay

Teacher Leadership. Behaviors and Importance of Teacher Leaders - Essay Example Teacher leadership is believed to have played a major role in the act of changes in education. The concept of teacher leadership has played a vital role in changing the professional nature of teachers, changing the reward system of teachers, improvement in the teaching profession with the concept of continuous change and elevating participation of the teachers in the process of making effective decisions. When researchers started researching the notion of teacher leadership, they associated the notion with those teachers who are situated in the formal leadership roles such as teachers working as experienced teachers and teachers working as the department heads (Saha, 2009). Teachers who have assumed these formal position were found to conduct their leadership responsibility outside the class rooms and were given extra time to conduct these responsibilities. Teachers who had assumed formal position as leaders helped other teachers in problem solving and improving school conditions. Te achers assumed these position only with the aim of gaining growth in their professional life or if it was necessary to help their students and classrooms. Teachers who assume these positions do not act as a superior being, they rather work with other teachers as partners or teammates. When teachers assume these leadership positions their roles as teachers increased and these roles enhanced their professional life and teachers started gaining increased say in administrative as well as curriculum aspects of the educational institute. The main point that needs to be taken into consideration is that the effects of this kind of leadership of teachers was obtained because these teachers assumed formal leadership positions in educational institutes and they did not practice leadership roles inside the classroom setting. Researchers have figured out that more positive impact of teacher leadership can be obtained if teachers practice leadership roles within their classrooms (Muijs, 2007). Th e authority structure of schools and educational institutes has been altered in such a way that responsibilities of teachers of these institutes have been increased and these responsibilities promote the notion of teacher leaders within the context of classrooms. Body According to Muijs, the concept of teacher leadership refers to the various behaviors and activities that are together conducted by teachers within an educational institute(Muijs, 2007). This definition of teacher leadership differentiates between the leadership roles played by a teacher within the class and outside the class. The difference is that teacher leaders make use of their relationship with students and colleagues along with curriculum to bring improvement to the educational institute. According to Rinn, the leadership behaviors that are exhibited by the teachers result in enhanced performance of the educational center and the students inside the institute as well as outside the institute but these behaviors are exhibited by teachers within the classroom only(Rinn, 2003). These behaviors are quite informal as compared to the formal behaviors that a teacher exhibits while she is conducting leadership roles outside the classroom. The leadership roles that are conducted outside the classroom are conducted with the aim of enhancing performance of other teachers. The difference between conducting teacher leadership roles within and outside the classrooms does not clearly explain or simplify the notion of teacher leadership. Various activities have been referred to activities conducted by teacher leaders. These activities include: development of the
